Planting Guide

Planting Checklist

To ensure successful tree planting:

  • All trees must be planted so the first set of roots are within three inches of the soil surface.
  • All twine or metal must be removed from the root ball and burlap must be pulled 1/3rd of the way down.
  • All trees must be healthy.
  • Four inches of mulch extending three feet from the trunk is recommended. Keep mulch away from the trunk of the tree.

Types of Trees and Shrubs

Three types of trees and shrubs can be purchased:

Bare root trees and shrubs are usually less expensive than containerized or balled and burlapped plants, but are available only during their dormant season, usually in early spring before plants have leafed out.

Containerized and balled and burlapped trees and shrubs are available throughout the growing season. Generally, balled and burlapped plants are larger than containerized plants, although large containers are sometimes available.
