In 2021, the Blaine Police Department participated in a grant funded opportunity to hire a mental health professional to identify populations in need within the community and structure a program to best serve their needs while working alongside law enforcement. Incorporating a mental health professional into law enforcement response was such a success that Blaine Police Department created a full-time position within the department Fall 2022.
The Mental Health Coordinator position works with the following populations: mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, and the unsheltered. This position responds with officers to calls, as well as follows up with individuals to connect them to services and address their individual needs. This position is involved with multiple committees and associations, as well as contributes to community education initiatives to increase community awareness of mental illness and reduce the stigma often associated with it.
