With the increase in temperatures and a lot of sunshine, it is common for Minnesota water bodies to produce harmful algae blooms. Some can make pets and humans sick. Pets, especially dogs, are susceptible to harmful algae because they swallow water while swimming and doing activities in the water like retrieving a ball. Keep an eye out for signs of a recent bloom, such as green scum on the shoreline. When in doubt, stay out. If you are exposed, be sure to wash off with fresh water immediately afterwards. Unfortunately, blue green algae cannot be eliminated from water bodies.
