Keep the Water Flowing
Tips to Help Keep Water Pipes and Meters from FreezingWith the long stretch of cold temperatures, the City of Blaine would like to give residents a few tips that can help avoid frozen pipes or water meters.
- Check the location of your water meter. Make sure if it is in a closet or well pit, the door is kept open. Make sure some source of heat is getting to this area to avoid the pipes from freezing.
- If you do have frozen pipes that affect or damage your water meter, call the City at 763-785-6165. If it is after 3PM, call 911 as on-call staff are available.
There are two ways to tell if your pipes may soon freeze:
- If your water is starting to turn yellow.
- If the temperature of the actual water is below 35 degrees.
If either of these two items are present, a helpful tip is to let the water run from one faucet in your home. The water stream should be about the width of a pencil lead.
The City is responsible for the main water lines in the street and the service lateral, to the shutoff in the homeowner’s yard. So far the City has not had any main lines frozen in the street. Some issues of frozen pipes have occurred at individual homes. The City of Blaine Public Works staff continue to watch the situation closely and will provide further updates if needed.
